Romans 9:16 says, “ So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.”
There was a man named Jeremiah Lanphier, an evangelist in New York City in 1857. Concerned for the spiritual condition of the city, he invited people to join him for one hour of prayer—from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.—at the North Dutch Church on Fulton Street. His simple desire was to implore God to convict sinners and bring repentance to New York.
On September 23, 1857, he waited. At 12:30 only one person had arrived. By the end of the hour, six men were there, pouring out their hearts to the Lord. The next week, sixteen came. In three weeks, forty. They prayed for their unsaved family members and friends. By mid-October, roughly a hundred people were gathering consistently. Then came the economic crash of late October—the Panic of 1857. Instead of driving people away, it only increased the numbers who came to pray.
Other cities followed their lead, and what began in that small church became known as the Fulton Street Revival—a movement that spread across the nation.
My point is this: revival started with one church concerned about its city, one man willing to start a prayer meeting, and the faithful prayers of just a few trusting Christians.
We believers have the same power today as they did in 1857, nothing has changed, they didn’t have a different Holy Spirit living inside of them. We can cause change by storming the throne of grace. We can intercede right where we are planted.
Looking at the chaos in our world today—we need to
make a commitment to pray for this country, our families, friends and neighbors. We can do it, we are children of the King!
"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14
