The Adventures of Wild Winston: Watch Me!

“Listen, Wild Winston,” I said. “I raised two wild boys to adulthood, and they both turned out to be fine men. You are not going to break me!”

Wild Winston is, without a doubt, an Alpha male, bent on ruling the pack.

Big Wayne wasn’t having it and recognized we needed help and suggested we call for reinforcements.

“Candi, we need to hire a trainer.”

In all our years of raising puppies, nothing had prepared us for what we were experiencing.

This tiny, adorable four-legged bundle of fur and fluff was an unstoppable ball of energy bent on having his own way.

Without words he was saying, “Look at me. Look at me. Play with me. Play now. Don’t tell me what to do. I am the boss, not you. I want what I want, when I want it.”

Enter Trainer Kerry.

Kerry arrived with a plan. And worksheets.

Kerry explained that Winston needed to learn to take his instructions from us.

Two words would help him to look to his humans for direction.

“Watch me.” Simple. Direct. To the point. “Watch me.”

All of our lives, including Winston’s, would be lived much more peacefully if he would learn that we have his very best interest in mind and want only what is best for him.

Truth be told, Winston is not so different from many of us. He may becanine and we may be human, but strong wills are not limited to onespecies.

Living for ourselves, demanding our own way, wanting what we want when we want is exhausting. Jesus offers a better way.

His invitation is simple. “Watch Me.”

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” (Mt.11:28-30)

Jesus lived to do the will of His Father. When we learn to do likewise our lives become restful, free and light, even when the world has seemingly gone crazy.  

Apparently Winston is not the only one who needs to hear the words “Watch Me!”
