Why Me Lord

I love Anna Stodolak, but unlike Anna I have never been into country music. Now that I’ve upset at least half of you don’t tune out.Anna  ALWAYS has something great to say. Trust me you won’t be disappointed!!

Back in 1972 I was really into Country Music. Some of the songs, that I remember, from the year my second daughter was born were: "Happiest Girl In The Whole U.S.A." by Donna Fargo, "One's On The Way" by Loretta Lynn, "I Can't Stop Loving You" by Conway Twitty, "I'm Gonna Knock On Your Door" by Billy Crash Craddock, and "Coat of Many Colors" by Dolly Parton. My most favorite song from 1972 was written and sung by Kris Kristofferson. I wasn't saved then but I felt the words and music deeply (Maybe the Lord was nudging me).

"Why Me Lord"

Why me Lord? What have I ever done

To deserve even one of the pleasures I've known?

Tell me, Lord, what did I ever do

That was worth lovin' you or the kindness you've shown

Lord help me, Jesus, I've wasted it so

Help me Jesus I know what I am

But now that you know that I've need you so

Help me, Jesus, my soul's in your hand

Try me, Lord, if you think there's a way

I can repay all I've taken from you

Maybe Lord I can show someone else

What I've been through myself, on my way back to you

Lord help me, Jesus, I've wasted it so

Help me Jesus I know what I am

But now that you know that I've need you so

Help me, Jesus, my soul's in your hand

Lord help me, Jesus, I've wasted it so

Help me Jesus I know what I am

But now that you know that I've need you so

Help me, Jesus, my soul's in your hand

Jesus, my soul's in your hand

I tried to break this song down to how the Bible corresponds with the lines.

The beginning of "Why Me Lord" shows Kristofferson is feeling really humble and thankful toward God. He's asking, “Why me?” because he knows he hasn't done anything to earn all the good things in his life. It’s a moment of honest reflection, realizing how much he's been blessed simply because God is kind and merciful not because he deserves it.

Titus 3:5 “He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy.” It emphasizes that salvation and kindness from God are not rewards for good behavior but acts of compassion

James 1:17 “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights.” A reminder that all pleasures and blessings come from God, not because we deserve them, but because He is good.

The chorus is a heartfelt call for help and guidance from God. It speaks to how we all need His presence in our lives. It reminds us that real strength starts with being humble, and that reaching out to God for support is not only brave, it’s something we all need to do.

Psalm 51:1-2 “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.”  This reflects an understanding that forgiveness is not earned but given through divine grace.

James 4:10 “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.”  A promise that when you're humble, God restores you.

The second verse talks about how we all mess up sometimes and have things we regret. It reminds us that nobody's perfect and we all fall short of what God wants for us. But it also gives hope. We can own up to our mistakes, make things right, and try to live in a way that shows love and respect for God.

Acts 3:19 – “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.” This verse captures the cleansing so your sins can be wiped away and the Lord can give you times of peace.

1 John 1:9 – “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” A reminder that God’s forgiveness is always available when we come to Him honestly.

The song "Why Me Lord" is all about recognizing how good God is to us even when we mess up or feel like we don’t deserve it. It’s a reminder to be thankful for His grace and to lean on Him when life gets tough. The lyrics speak to how we all make mistakes and need God’s help to get through. That’s a big part of living as a Christian, knowing we can’t do it all on our own and being humble enough to ask for His guidance. No matter what we’ve done, God’s love and forgiveness are always there if we’re willing to turn to Him.

Make it a Significant Saturday! God is good…
