NAMES FOR THE HOMES WE’RE HEADING TOWARD
I was at Jim Reik's funeral on Friday and while listening to the speakers of Jim's family and Pastors Ray and Candi, I heard the word 'Heaven' described in a few different ways. Some that I recall were "Beyond the Blue", "His Forever Home", and "In the Presence of God".
Some of the phrases they used today, painted such a tender picture of what waits for us. They weren’t just poetic descriptions, they were reminders that Heaven isn’t distant or imaginary. It’s real, personal, and already prepared for us. Hearing those words made it easier to lift our eyes a little higher and remember that God’s promises aren’t just for someday, they’re meant to give us strength right now.
Some days life feels heavy, and our hearts start looking for something steady to hold onto. The Bible tells us that God has prepared a place for us, and sometimes giving that place a name helps us remember what’s waiting for us. I think of 'The Father’s House', not a big fancy building, but a real home where we’re welcomed, known, and never pushed aside. When Jesus said He was preparing a place for us, He meant a place where we belong.
I also picture 'The Bright Country', a place where the light never fades and nothing feels uncertain. It’s the kind of place where you breathe easier because the shadows that follow us here simply don’t exist there. Right beside it is 'The Place of No Shadows', a reminder that heaven isn’t just beautiful; it’s safe. Nothing broken or painful comes with us.
Sometimes heaven feels like 'The Far Shore', the quiet landing after a long trip. We’re not meant to run forever. God sees the miles we’ve walked, the storms we’ve stood through, and the prayers we whispered when no one else heard. 'The Far Shore' is His promise that the journey really does end in peace.
And then there’s 'The Garden of Reunion', the place where joy meets us again, where every separation is healed, and where the people we miss are no longer out of reach. It’s the picture Scripture gives us when it says God will wipe every tear from our eyes. Not just comfort but restoration.
All these names point to the same truth; heaven is home. It’s God’s presence without interruption. It’s the 'Forever Home' He’s been preparing since before we were born. And when life feels overwhelming, these names help us remember that our story is heading somewhere good, and God Himself is leading us there.
