God’s Word
Each week when I stand before the church and as I get ready to speak I hold up my Bible and I ask; “Do you have your Bible? Show me.” Then I remind everyone that the Bible I’m holding up is our authority. I am not the authority, the church board is not the authority. The Word of God is our authority! It’s God‘s love letter to us. It’s His plan of salvation. His plan is revealed in Genesis and this plan is the theme of the entire Bible. The Bible was written over a period of 1500 years by over 40 different authors in four languages. The writers were made up of many different professions-fishermen, kings, one was a doctor. There were shepards, farmers, even a tax collector. And the writers were completely consistent in what they were writing about.
The Bible is God’s inerrant word to us. Period. While many believers agree with me, some people will say that truth means we don’t need to do anything to defend the Bible. It can stand on its own. After all, it is God’sWord.
God’s Word can stand on its own. Nowhere in Scripture does the Bible try to prove itself. The assumption—no, the conviction—of the biblical writers was that the Scriptures are true, reliable, trustworthy, and the Word of God.
“God — his way is perfect; the word of the Lord is pure. He is a shield to all who take refuge in him” (Ps. 18:30).
“The instruction of the Lord is perfect, renewing one’s life; the testimony of the Lord is trustworthy, making the inexperienced wise. The precepts of the Lord are right, making the heart glad; the command of the Lord is radiant, making the eyes light up” (Ps. 19:7-8).
“All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness” (2 Tim. 3:16).
Have I made God’s Word the final authority over my experiences? Is there any circumstance whose voice I currently believe above what God has said?
PRAYER: Father, establish Your Word as the final authority in my heart. Help me to reject every objection and remain steadfast in trusting and following Your Word. Help me to be more diligent spending time in Your Word. The Bible doesn’t lead me to an encounter with you, it is an encounter with You. Help me to be more diligent and disciplined in spending time in Your Word which means spending time with You. In Jesus name. Amen.
