I was listening to a podcast  a few Sunday’s ago when an interesting story about the song “Crystal Blue Persuasion” came up. Some of us can still remember hearing that song growing up. Tommy James & the Shondells wrote and recorded it in 1969.

What struck me was that the idea for the song came from a religious poem a fan handed to the artist—its theme rooted in the book of Revelation. When Tommy penned the song, he based it on the crystal sea described in Revelation 4:6. I tried to Google the original poem, but it seems lost to history.

Tommy was wrestling with the same struggles most rockers—and, really, most people—face when success (or the lack of it) comes knocking. In one of those moments, alone in a Holiday Inn room, he opened a Gideon Bible. He cried out to God, and God met him right where he was. He didn’t have to clean up his act first. He even “stole” the Bible, not realizing that’s exactly what the Gideons hope people will do.

God always meets us right where we are—in the middle of our messes, regardless of past sins and mistakes. He is always searching for us, calling us to Himself. We often think the decision to accept and follow Him is ours alone, but the truth is He chose us before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4).

Tommy says he still drops little tidbits about God’s love into his songs. He ends every concert with “Sweet Cherry Wine,” a song he wrote about the saving blood of Jesus. That was another surprise for me.

“To save us, He gave us

Sweet cherry wine, so very fine

We'll drink it right down,

Pass it all around”

He further stated  he ends every concert with the words …”Jesus is coming, keep looking up”.

So I’ll end this with mine..

“Amen, even so, come Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20)
